Death of a German concertmaster, 95
RIPThe German violinist Conrad von der Goltz, former concertmaster of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, has died at a great age. A member of a family that took refuge from Hitler in Sweden, he won the ARD prize in 1956 and became an influential orchestra leader and teacher.
Two of his children, violinist Gottfried (b.1964) and cellist Kristin (b.1966), became significant performers in the period instrument world with the foundation in 1987 of the Freiburger Barockorchester, still going strong (his first child, Christian, b.1959, is a jazz pianist). Though Kristin left the FBO, Gottfried remains concertmaster and artistic director of the FBO (incidentally a self-governing organisation whose 29 members are shareholders), though in a recent continuation of offspring of notable musicians directing the orchestra, he now shares that post with Cecilia Bernardini, whose father is the notable period instrument oboist Alfredo Bernardini.
Sad news. However, I believe the violinist pictured is the late Aaron Rosand.
