New conductor at colliery band
NewsThe Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the most famous ensemble in its genre, has appointed Michaekl Bach as its new professional music director.
It also has a resident music director in Steve Phillips.
The band appeared on the film Brassed Off and performed at the Proms. It has attracted new works by Harrison Birtwistle, Malcolm Arnold and Hans Wener Henze.
Ah Grimey. Fond memories of Conductor George Thompson in the 60s-early 70s and managing to get tickets for Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation (CISWO) annual concerts in Sheffield performed after a weekend regional, mainly Colliery, band competition. Professionals before they were professional. Even having a parent working at Grimethorpe Colliery site didn’t guarantee getting tickets, which were like gold dust. Good luck to them, and to Michael Bach (interesting background). So good they’ve weathered the financial storms.

Better not mention the Yorkshire band with Mills in its name around here, the one that had to rename itself when performing in the USA.
