Canada sacks arts board, English arts board scraps festival
NewsContrasting governance styles overnight.
In Canada, the government of Alberta has dismissed the board of the ever-troubled Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and appointed an administrator. Banff (pic) is famed for its chamber music competition.
In England, the willowy trust that oversees Dartington Arts Centre in Devon has scrapped next summer’s festival, leading to the resignation of the artistic director and all of the staff.
Which method works better?
The Dartington Arts Centre method is probably more economic for the board as they less likely to have the expense of severance pay.
Hi Norman – The time difference isn’t working in our favour, but wanted to correct a couple of points. 1 – The Government of Alberta governs the Board. Your title implies the decision was made by the federal government, not the provincial. 2 – Only the Board of Governors (an unpaid, volunteer Board appointed by the province) is impacted. The management team remains in place and focused on the work of offering arts and leadership programming.
