The folk music of the South Pacific is one of the undiscovered treasures of the world. Many years ago a friend brought back a record of Tahitians singing, and although I only heard it once I have never forgotten it. But I have never been out that way so have never found anything similar. This is as close as it comes, and just speaks to an inherent musicality in some of these island communities.
The hymn is: I know the Lord will make a way for me. Apart from the dazzling harmonics, it’s worth noting that many of the players are deeply religious and I think that shows in the singing. This was filmed just before they beat Australia for the first time in 69 years. Must have done them some good.
