The Lyric Opera has quietly introduced Emily Nebel as assistant concertmaster.

Originally from Arizona, she was concertmaster at Darmstadt and Norrköping as well as leading a Marriage of Figaro at Covent Garden during a nine-year sojourn in Europe.

She tells the Lyric orchestra blog: ‘Alongside opera and other orchestral leading, I’ve gotten to collaborate in chamber music settings around the UK and Europe with a lot of friends and colleagues whom I really admire. I’ve also gone on some unforgettable tours, most recently to South America and Spain with the early music group Arcangelo. I feel fortunate to have had such experiences and can’t wait to tap into the thriving musical scene at the Lyric and throughout the city of Chicago.’

Hope she doesn’t plan on living in
Bucktown, as a man was recently brutally attacked there and beaten in broad daylight in an alley with lots of cars passing by, and yes, security footage shows it was two Black guys, or as Mayor Johnson would describe them, as youth coming from deprived areas. Right…Deprived of human decency. The victim made the mistake of walking in the alley while eating pizza instead of noticing two guys loitering. Lost his cell phone and backpack.

I see you have very courageously attached your name to these “thoughts.”

    • Stephen Owades says:

Does it make you feel better somehow to make such an absurd comment here?

    • Lemmy says:

…and yet a lot of other wonderful parts of Bucktown and Chicago peacefully enjoyed their day without problem…it’s a huge city…stop fear mongering on here and go back to enjoying downtown Downers Grove…

      BTW: Congratulations to Emily Nebel!…

Shall I provide anecdotes of crime in whatever backwater cesspool you live in?

I think you came to the wrong place to grind your axe…

      Not racist much, huh?

I live in Bucktown. Looking out my window right now. Have lived here since 2003. This a much rarer occurrence than when I lived in Tupelo, or before that, in suburban Cincinnati.

But none of that is relevant, you’re just opening your mouth and spewing vitriol because…. I don’t know, but I have some theories.

the headline suggests firing of CSO concertmaster for the recent nepo scandal, too bad it ain’t so.

    • Eric Wright says:

I don’t know if it really suggests it per se, but the recent news did certainly make my brain go there, as well…. context is powerful, I guess…

  • Alto says:

Did Emily win this audition through the traditional audition process? Lyric Opera advertised the audition in the AFM, she sent her resume, began prelims, and played all the subsequent rounds behind a screen? Or was she fast tracked by being appointed, given an invitation to trial for the job, or start in finals (or semis)?
I don’t want to jump to conclusions. It would be nice to know from someone that is certain how this audition was run.

Also I can’t understand why the article would state, she was “quietly” introduced. Anyone else seem like that is suggestive and/or strange wording?

  • Mark Fisher says:

I’m a member of the Lyric orchestra. What exactly do you mean by concertmaster and by quietly?
