La Scala is grounded in quake-stricken Marrakech
NewsA plane carrying the Milan opera company to a concert in Brussels was forced to land in Morocco by air-traffic disruption that followed the country’s massive earthquake. The Brussels concert was cancelled.
La Scala said: ‘The plane that was supposed to transport the 215 orchestral players, choir members and staff from Aalborg, the venue of last night’s concert, to Brussels this morning was grounded at Marrakech Airport.
‘And the impact of the earthquake on several European routes meant that no other solution could be found in time for this evening’s concert.’
The headline is misleading – it is only the chartered airplane that was grounded in Marocco and not able to to reach Aalborg (in Denmark) to take the Scala troupe from there to Brussels in time for the concert. The Scala troupe is safe and sound in Aalborg. Vagaries of transportation logistics and just-in-time planning!
Thank you, Zenaida, for your clarification. That LaScala would travel between Aalborg and Brussels, via Marrakech, made no sense.
It used to be a joke about air travel in the US, back when major airlines had “hubs”, no matter where you were going… you had to go through Atlanta.
“Was forced to land?” The distance between Aalborg and Marrakech is almost 4,000 kms. That’s a mighty long round trip! It is surely impossible La Scala was grounded. Far more likely the aircraft due to fly the company to Brussels was stuck in Marrakech and unable to fly to Aalborg to pick up the company.
