This town has a state operetta
OperaThe announcement of a new chief conductor has alerted us to the existence of the Dresden State Operetta, a light entertainment ensemble kindly paid for by the government of Saxony.
The new music director is Missouri-born Michael Ellis Ingram.
Well, admittedly the name is misleading – but Staatsoperette Dresden is in fact nothing to do with ‘Freistaat Sachsen’ , but in fact “kindly paid for” by the city (“town”?) of Dresden.
Historical reasons led to the ‘Staat’ in its name.
Two further ‘Staatstheater’ in Dresden, Staatsschauspiel and Sächsische Staatsoper (Semperoper) on the other hand, are indeed financed by the government of Saxony.
In the Dresden suburb of Radebeul there is another very interesting full time professional theatre: Landesbühnen Sachsen, which also performs operetta (as well as opera, musical and drama) and is co-financed by the state of Saxony and various local and municipal bodies.
The name is misleading. It’s a charming venue (newly opened in 2016, the old one – from 1947 – having been closed down), with charming productions. But it is funded by the city of Dresden, so it is a municipal theatre, not a state theatre.
This Staatsoperette Dresden has always had a big following and was beloved by the people of Dresden. I have wonderful childhood memories of the time when my mother sang there and I and other kids of performers were allowed to roam the theater and play in the fields behind the building. Those were great times! I am glad to hear that the institution is still going strong!
Despite your not printing my last comment, I still can’t believe you’ve never heard of this institution.
