The Salzburg Festival has replaced Franz Welser-Möst, recovering from back surgery, with the British conductor Daniel Harding.

Press release: With regret, Franz Welser-Möst must withdraw from his concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic on 20 and 21 August. He is recovering well from his orthopaedic problems but his consultants have recommended he refrain from conducting for another three weeks to ensure they do not reoccur.

The Salzburg Festival is very grateful to Daniel Harding, who has agreed to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in the same programme.

    A disaster replaces another disaster.

  • zayin says:

Honestly, is he still employed as a commercial pilot?

Obviously not full time. He seems to have a lot of free time on his hands.

I would not want my pilot to be flying as a hobby in between gigs.

    • Bill says:

Would you feel better about your conductor conducting as a hobby in between flights?

    • Sue Sonata Form says:

You obviously know zero about aviation compliance and flying a Boeing 777. Nor about world wide pilot shortages. Let’s hope that when he stands on the podium with his stick he’s not spooling up those super powerful GE90 engines!!

      Good luck, Daniel Harding.

  • Rob says:

    He’ll be back

    Hasta la vista baby

  • Sonicsinfonia says:

    Can’t he fly himself in?

  • Corno di Caccia says:

Harding is hardly a top-flight conductor. The Vienna Phil must’ve been desperate….

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

This is exactly what Daniel Harding does. This is an Air France 777 leaving LA. These absolutely remarkable machines and the infrastructure which allows them to negotiate the airways with safety is not dissimilar to a conductor with a modern orchestra. And Maestro Harding probably has English, French and German under his belt.
