Searching for Sugarman, RIP
RIPAn obscure Detroit singer-songwriter who found fame in 1990s South Africa, Sugar Man Sixto Rodriguez, has died at 81.
Found to be selling more records than Elvis and the Beatles, he was tracked down by a movie ‘Searching for Sugarman’ which found him working in a menial job, looking after his neighbourhood.
His first two albums, Cold Fact and Coming from Reality, are lovely. He worked manual jobs by choice. A committed socialist, he was active in local politics.
