After 10 years in the job, Tamara Rojo has left the ENB to run the San Francisco Ballet so the English National Ballet has a new Artistic Director.  Aaron Watkin is a Canadian former dancer.

He began his dance career at the National Ballet of Canada, and went on to perform at the English National Ballet, the Dutch National Ballet, the Frankfurt Ballet and the Spanish National Dance Company. But for the past 17 years he has been director of the Semperopera Ballett in Dresden, German, so this is a rather low profile appointment for the ENB.

He is promising a more diverse programme for the Company, with more contemporary fare and lesser-known choreographers, “showcasing a broad spectrum of dance”.

Getting in touch with the person who runs our second company is important to ballet lovers, so here is an interview filmed just before he left Semperopera, which allows us to get to know him better.
