Tomorrow’s concert by Netrebko and Eyvazov in the Lichtenstein capital of Vaduz has been called off ‘for health reasons‘.

They were due to appear in a programme of arias with the Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra (who knew?), conductor Michelangelo Mazza.

  • MMcGrath says:

What a snobbish comment about Liechtenstein! “Who knew.” A rich principality, culturally richly endowed, known for some fantastic wines and ski slopes, home of one of the world’s great art collections, and with its royal family owning some of the most amazing architectural jewels in Vienna (incl. the recently renovated Palais Liechtenstein): Why would you NOT assume it also has an orchestra?

    • Euphonium Al says:

The country has also cleaned up its tax shelter status a bit over the past 15 years. Not out of the goodness of its heart, mind you, but under strong pressure from the USA and the EU. There are better places for the top .01% to stash their wealth now.

    • Hugo Preuß says:

Perhaps bc Liechtenstein’s capital and largest municipality (*not* a city!) Vaduz has 4.700 people living in it? Not necessarily a place where you’d expect a symphony orchestra.

      • Eusebius Lipschitz says:

And why not? Liechtenstein is a country of great wealth and if they have the $$__, then more power to them. Obviously, it is a quite cultured land.

    • Tzctslip says:

I didn’t know. There’s no reason to assume such a small country would have a proficient orchestra, if they do good for them but I don’t see why this should be general knowledge.

    • Eusebius Lipschitz says:

Agreed. It’s a lovely if unfairly overlooked country. I enjoyed my time there.

    • Jane Christo says:

      Absolutely.
Accompanined by a sarcastic comment about Anna Netrebko.
      “Classical Music’s # 1 News site” Really?

  • John Dietmann says:

I’ve not had the pleasure of enjoying Lichtenstein’s cultural and financial benefits. But for several years in the 1990’s I was at the Scubertiade just across the border in Austria. It would be invidious to name the artists who made my attendance so memorable.

  • Jonathan Sutherland says:

Donna Anna has a long-known chronic health condition known as tributum aversionis.

  • Isabella says:

Really for health reasons, I do not believe this for one minute. More like that someone along the line had a bang of consciousness and cancelled them

  • michael ecker says:

Sorry Liechtenstein is not anymore a tax shelter . This is history!

  • HMG says:

Such a small country need not mess with tax refusal activities
    Hope for a good solution

  • Rio Fer says:

opera singers as well as athletes’ second – or maybe their first -favorite sport is to evade paying taxes. Netebko should have fought harder, the same way she did siding with Putin in the past, to keep her tax free concert. She should have earned more! Without having to publicly denounce bad fiscal practices…..

  • Alice E says:

What does the artist health reasons have to do with Tax Shelter. That’s a
    Ery misleading headline

  • Lina says:

Both are evals! Under the bridge! netrebka and her boyfriend are garbage

  • Linda R says:

She cancelled last minute, for ‘health reasons’, a members’ dress rehearsal at the Royal Opera some years ago, and her cover did a fantastic job, very well received by the audience. I left a little early and found Netrebko lurking in a corner of the opera house foyer, on her phone and sounding thoroughly displeased. I don’t think she was happy with her substitute’s reception.

  • Marko says:

Netrebko, like Gergiev, refuses to denounce Putin. Performance venues are limited to her because of this, and it is disappointing that La Scala decided to ignore this fact – all for ticket sales. Disgusting. Putin is a tyrant and will be convicted as a war criminal.
