Magnificent pianist, saddened to hear. RIP.
During the heyday of his performing career, Val was probably the most prodigious and superlative interpreter of the works of Enescu. If fact, if it were not for Val, the marvelous music of Enescu would be virtually unknown and unperformed today. Among his other extraordinary accomplishments, Val’s Enescu legacy will survive for generations. RIP, my musical compatriot, as you have now joined the greatest orchestra ever assembled!
Just curious, what recordings of Mr. Gheorghiu exist of the music by Enescu? I am only familiar with the 3rd violin sonata, Impressions d’enfance, and the piano part of the Chamber Symphony under Silvestri. Did he record any of the solo piano music?
RIP.
I grew up with his beautiful recordings of the Mendelssohn concerti (with Herbert Kegel, iirc).
RIP.
