The farewell album of the retiring Emerson Quartet will include the day the music died – when Arnold Schoenberg topped over into atonality in his second string quartet in December 1908.

The soloist will be Barbara Hannigan.

Other signature works on the Emerson disc will be the Berg quartet opus 3, Hindemith’s Mélancholie and Chausson’s Chanson perpétuelle.

Music did not die with Schönberg’s second string quartet, despite a severe intoxication when breathing air from another planet.

This should definitely qualify as one of the most diamond-selling grammy-winning classical albums of all time! I can’t wait til the release!!!

Nice. This is a very classy way to finish. What a journey through time this quartet have made. Schönberg is the bridge between heightened emotion and scholarship—a tribute to their listenership. It is not trite, this is a dignified parting gift.

Schoenberg warned about the sadistic male nurse with the morphine syringe. He lurks just out of view.
