Death of a Sadlers Wells soprano, 94
RIPThe Australian coloratura Margaret Nesbitt has died at a great age.
She was a soloist at Sadlers Wells for eight years in the 1950s and a principal with the Melbourne Opera Company in the early 1970s. She was a great favourite in Sydney as Maria in The Sound of Music.
Norman, just a correction. Her surname is spelt Nisbett (not Nesbitt).
In the EMI/Sadlers Wells LP of”Orpheus in the Underworld,” Miss Nisbett sang the role of Cupid.
Her fellow Australians in that recording included June Bronhill, Kevin Miller and Jon Weaving.
