Canterbury honours Chi-chi
NewsSome controversial choices in the Garden of Kent:
The University will award honorary degrees to 15 inspirational individuals during its graduation ceremonies at Canterbury and Rochester cathedrals, 12 – 21 July.
Among those to receive awards will be Maria Alekhina (Masha), Diana Burkot, Olga Borisova and Taso Pletner – all members of the Russian punk collective Pussy Riot – former England cricket captain and commentator David Gower OBE, musician/educator Chi-Chi Nwanoku CBE, comedian Josie Long and former Director of Kent Sport, Mike Wilkins.
The ceremonies will take place at Rochester on 12 July and Canterbury from 17-21 July.
And what is the controversial part? Not everyone knows all of these names; esp. if you read from abroad.
Tick, tick, tick…
Just as long as they don’t annoy Chi-Chi by playing the national anthem
She’s well placed along with a Russian punk collective and a comedian.
She already flaunts a CBE. Surely time to review the whole honours system and the issuing of honorary degrees.
Is Canterbury honouring Chi Chi the musician or Chi Chi the ‘politician’? I sincerely hope the former.
hardly matters which since these self aggrandising “awards” are performative bollocks.
I think they mean Chi Chi Gonzalez, the golfer. He’s been brown bread for a while, but news travels slowly in that part of the world.
Which Canterbury University exactly? There are two: Christ Church and University of Kent.
U of K
In fact there are three, one of which is in New Zealand. I doubt that the Kiwis would give an award to Chi Chi Andchong however.
Chi Chi, should be helping the advancement of music and fighting to establish top-notch class and instrumental music teaching in state schools because there is an unmitigated disaster out there. Instead she seems to be more interested in capitalising on divisive, identity politics USA style.
Chi Chi, should remember that in the UK there is no division between ‘ethnicities’. Racism does exist, but it’s not the norm. The real division is between the ultra rich and the rest. Far too much talent is being lost in state schools because no one is head-hunting, encouraging and supporting children with potential.
Chi Chi, make all unprivileged children your priority!
