Brazil mourns ‘most creative’ composer
RIPPresident Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil has issued a statement lamenting the death in Rio of João Donato, ‘one of our greatest and most creative composers’.
He was 88 and suffering from pneumonia.
Lula continued: ‘João Donato saw music in everything. He innovated, he passed through samba, bossa nova, jazz, forro and in the mixture of rhythm built something unique. He kept creating and innovating until the end.’.
Completely misplaced news… João Donato was a great composer: of Latin music with elements of jazz. Types of news like this only serve to eclipse the plethora of great composers that are emerging in Latin America, Brazil included. Many of them are in their 30s and 40s, and make contemporary music with much more inventiveness than many Europeans and North Americans – although they don’t have the same recognition… All that’s left is to leave laziness aside, and go research abou the new CONTEMPORARY CLASSICAL MUSIC.
