The new Indiana Jones film, which the composer John Williams says will be his last, contains a fetching solo for the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

It’s called Helena’s theme.

Coming soon to a concert hall near you.

Does it sound like a sultry Dorothy writing a teary letter to Mickey Rooney? Or is there perhaps a degree of cynicism that precludes musical expression? Who knows?

  • J Barcelo says:

Well, thank you! That’s the one positive thing I’ve heard about the film; everyone else is trashing it. Not sure the kids will be thrilled with Helena’s Theme, but I like it: reminds me of Korngold.

It’d be worth it just to see the locations of the magnificent Northumbrian Bamburgh Castle (in flames…), North Yorks Moors Railway,
and Leaderfoot Viaduct over the River Tweed, all not visited for some time.

  • NYMike says:

Reminiscent of the sound of the old Hollywood studio concertmasters!

  • MMcGrath says:

The film already sounds iffy, given professor “emeritus for life” Jones’ age. Plus, Williams is no Hans Zimmer so his film music… well, I find his scores all very similar and increasingly tired. (The less said about his concerto the better.)

Add now the staid Mutter as she swings into action on a vine / riding a camel / traveling on the back of a croc down the Amazon playing the violin (with bare shoulders, of course)??

Yawn or cheer? I guess we’ll find out!

  • Future-oriented says:

Just watched the movie, it was great! One of the better blockbusters I saw the last few years. As for the small vocal minority trashing it…I guess you can’t hold it against past-oriented people that they live stuck in rose-tinted memories of the past…

Fun music video here of the actual recording session, with John Williams conducting:

  • Old Piano Player says:

At least its music, thankfully unlike Hans Zimmer’s atmospheric non-music. I know he is revered by many and I respect his craft but it’s safe that melodic lines are falling out of fashion. Beautiful music should never go out of style just like good food, the beauty of nature, etc…or maybe I’m just a dreamer?

  • Old Piano Player says:

Correction: I meant “sad” not “safe”

Ok, I’ll bite….. are they an item?

  • Robert Holmén says:

I wonder what it takes to get to get him to do one… last… score.

    More korn than gold

  • Gustavo says:

I prefer the original Helena’s Theme without solo violin as heard last year at the Hollywood Bowl and at La Scala di Milano.
