Three weeks after the Danish Radio orchestra was declared unsafe, musicians in the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland has referred “health and safety” issues to the Workplace Relations Commission.

It says players are frustrated by the failure the National Concert Hall to address ‘psychosocial risk factors, which are not specified.

A union organiser explained: ‘A psychosocial risk is any occurrence that can either physically or psychologically harm an individual or collective of people. And we believe currently within the NCH, for a variety of reasons, that potential exists.’

Oh my! Snowflakes. Show me the workplace without. “psychosocial” stress. Show me two people together and there is innately some degree of “performance” stress. (Does not have to be bad…)

  • Benjamin Nisbet says:

I just saw this orchestra 2 weeks ago. They seemed fairly happy, though the leader was clearly checked out.

    • Cormac says:

They don’t have a leader, and there are a host of other vacancies in the orchestra too…

    • Harold Wilkin says:

What do you mean by “checked out” ? They have not had a permanent leader for a very long time. The post has been re-advertised with auditions in early Sepember.

    • David Johnson says:

What do you mean by ‘checked out’? And this orchestra have not had a leader for many years, so wondering what your comment is based on

  • Zarathusa says:

If making music is so “psychosocially stressful”, why not try a job in heavy-construction work for a change-of-pace???

  • Jan Kaznowski says:

Not much of a story being so low on detail !

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

Let them stand aside and give their jobs to young music graduates who are desperate for the work.
