An English soloist who tweaked Brussels singing
RIPA member of the basses in the English National Opera chorus, Malcolm King got his break in 1977 as Masetto in a Paris Don Giovanni that was filmed by Joseph Losey.
After a fertile international solo career he joined Gerard Mortier at La Monnaie in Brussels in 1988 in the composite roles as singer, singing professor and musical advisor, a position he filled for eight years that were hugely beneficial for the company. In 1994 he became a trained Alexander Technique teacher, a practice he continued until his death, last week, in Brussels.
Malcolm King can also be heard in supporting roles on a number of studio recordings, including the Solti/Chicago “Damnation of Faust”(Decca) and the Mehta/ROH “Fanciulla de West” (DG).
I remember being impressed by his performance as Masetto in the Joseph Losey film adaptation of Don Giovanni. RIP
