I am distressed to learn of the sudden death of Jack Martin Händler, a Slovak who conducted the on-screen orchestra in the film of my novel, The Song of Names.

Jack, who was 75, was the son of two concentration camp survivors. His mother, pregnant soon after the war, announced that if the child lived she would make sure he was a violinist – to replace, in some way, all who had been murdered.

My condolences to his loved ones. He was a sweet man.

Jack was the founder-conductor of Solistes Européens Luxembourg,

Daniel Raiskin writes:

A very sad loss! Jack Martin Händler was a wonderfully passionate person…! Passionate about music and music making, about playing and about leading others by example. He cared a lot about the true meaning of our art and the way we should all serve it.
A great friend of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra he often attended rehearsals and as many concerts as he could. I never saw him happier when the orchestra really sounded well – he knew how much work and commitment went into achieving this and had enormous respect for his colleagues. He will be badly missed but always fondly remembered..! RIP dear Jack.

That is a sad loss. I missed the movie. But I enjoyed your book enormously. I’ll have to catch it on streaming.
