The Royal College of Music in London has informed staff that Michal Kaznowski, one of its teachers, died on Tuesday night.

Michal was cellist of the Maggini Quartet and former principal cello of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

He made more than 35 recordings of modern works with the Maggini, including the Peter Maxwell Davies cycle and quartets by Robert Simpson, James MacMillan, Eleanor Alberga, Roxanna Panufnik.

His wife Sarah Hedley-Miller was until recently a cellist in the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

A graduate of the Yehudi Menuhin School, Michal taught in the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music and, before that, at the Purcell School.
