Simon Rattle splashes out on first Munich season
OrchestrasBavarian Radio’s incoming music director has been rolling out his plans.
He will open with Haydn’s Creation, present a concert performance of Mozart’s Idomeneo and crown the enterprise with Schoenberg’s massive Gurrelieder. He is also planning world premieres by Thomas Adés, Betsy Jolas and the young Bavarian Johannes Wiedenhofer.
Business as usual, with a much bigger budget.

I hope to get tickets for Mahler 6 in Munich (or Paris)
Starting with a bang! I was lucky enough to get a ticket for his last Prom with the LSO as chef dirigent. Poulenc and Mahler 9.
Yes, I have too, and six other concerts, all for a total of £180! Great value.
No Gatti, no Thielemann. Not good enough, but I hope to go to the Blomstedt concerts.
Much bigger budget? Compared to what?
Love his music choices of music!
Kinder schafft Neues!
On the one hand, give him a break. Reduced Rattle is still Rattle and he’s pushing toward more challenges while pushing 70 than most half his age do.
On the other hand, he should have never left the LSO. It’s an abortive golden age. He can plead Brexit and family all he wants but the land that raised him to eminence needs him more than ever to speak for them before they lose their funding, and he’s leaving because that’s what celebrities do when the going gets tough.
Perhaps more than budget, it’s the focus and ultra long-term commitment to music and culture & fine arts generally by Bavarian governments and citizens that is the major driver here. Budget follows as a result.
