A harrassment investigation at Mexico City opera
OperaThe music director of Opera de Bellas in Mexico City, Ivan Lopez Reynoso, has admitted he is being investigated for harrassment.
He told a newspaper: ‘I hope that at the end of all the inquiries that are made within this collegiate body, things will be clarified soon and well.’
A union representing musicians and singers has called for him to be sacked.
“violencia de género” is translated by the UN as “gender-based violence” and is defined broadly and vaguely
So absent details of what is alleged, and as every jurisdiction has its own legal definition, it seems to me that “sexual harassment” is an inaccurate translation here or possibly mischaracterizes the nature of the allegations, afterall, “gender-based” is not necessarily “sexual” and “violence” is not necessarily “harassment”
How can anyone vote this down? It is a mere explanation of the meaning of the Spanish phrase, which apparently has not been translated properly. It is – explicitely so! – no comment on the facts of the case.
Are you new to the SD community? The lack of logic behind the down votes is one of its most endearing qualities. I occasionally post deliberately inoffensive comments, just to see how many down votes come my way.
*That* got an up vote from me! 😉
A letter was sent about two weeks ago to the Director of Bellas Artes by the union representing musicians, singers asking for his removal and there hasn’t been an official answer to it. In fact Mr López Reynoso continues with his everyday business as usual with total impunity. The allegations are rather serious Mr Lopez Reynoso is accused of sending explicit photos to underage ballet dancers. I hope this matter is resolved promptly.
Serious, indeed. How much of an idiot does one have to be to do this? Quite apart from the revolting nature of the deeds, he should have recognised the near-certainty of being caught.
Have u seen proof to the allegations that are NOT about sexual harrassment?
Dear @ Rio@gmail.com, SlippeDisc and readers,
This rumor of inappropriate behavior from Maestro Lopez-Reynoso is exactly that. A rumor. And the investigation on “sexual harassment” is an incorrect translation of “misbehavior” and once completed, will prove and show that he is still and has always been the consummate professional. Also, no one has asked Maestro Lopez-Reynoso for his resignation. That is inaccurate. It is inexcusable and irresponsible in today’s day and age for SlippeDisc to sensationalize (as usual) what is going to be found as a smear campaign. Please wait and refrain from making judgment one way or another.
Sensationalise? We could hardly have been more understated.
Yes, It is correct to call it that, your text is based on an article and this one in turn based on a rumor. Lack of objectivity is obvious
Dear Mr Lebrecht,
Character assassination is easy. Intelligent commentary, not so much. It strikes me as highly irresponsible and vicious to smear someone’s reputation reporting on rumors and not facts. Anyone can make an accusation. Self interest and laziness may be the motivation for clickbait but in my view publishing in this way is deeply cynical and malevolent. Maestro Lopez Reynoso deserves better.
Pepe Cassano, there is a document sent by the union representing all the Bellas Artes’ artist groups specifically asking for the removal of Mr Lopez Reynoso from his position. I don’t know to this day anyone who the chance to sit in front of an ethics committee just because its members have some free time to kill.
Mr Lopez Reynoso will resign, who in their right mind will? I don’t think you will.
The committee might have some proof to back the allegations against him.
In any case, even if Mr Lopez Reynoso is acquitted favorably for not ‘doing anything’ the artistic groups don’t want him anymore.
Then there’ll be bigger problems than his removal from his position alone.
Sorry not sorry, but Maestro Lopez-Reynoso has been cleared of any charges and found innocent. Justice did prevail. Opera Wire reported it today.
This isn’t just a slippedisc problem – the whole world has not figured out a proper protocol for reporting accusations of this sort, but it has figured out very quickly that there is a ravenous appetite for reading about them.
Most accusations that reach this level of formality turn out to be true; some do not; and the problem is that the general disposition for instant results can result in grave injustice in those (admittedly fewer) cases in which the accusations are untrue or exaggerated.
As Mr. Lebrecht will have noticed by now, he will receive attacks on his character and his site for publishing ‘unsubstantiated rumors’.
As if he were to blame for Mr. Lopez Reynoso’s unruly behavior.
The surprising thing about the matter is that the defenders of the accused director are not able to do it showing their real names.
Don’t shoot the messenger, this is right. However, nor the defenders or the accusers are showing their real names…
Ivan Lopez Reynoso put himself in the position his in today, nobody else did it for him.
