The fiddle player Seán Keane, a long-term member of the Chieftains, has died unexpectedly at his home in Rathcoole, Co Dublin, at the age of 76. His public performance was for US president Joe Biden when The Chieftains regaled him last month in Ballina, Co Mayo.

Sean was a fantastic musician, a marvellous friend and an inspiration to all young Irish trad players. He combined the best elements of trad fiddle playing, incorporating for example the Sligo, Clare, Longford, styles. He was also an inspired composer. May his spirit live on in his music for future generations.
