Great pianist dies, 93
RIPThe Salzburger Nachrichten has reported the death yesterday of the much-recorded pianist Ingrid Haebler.
Haebler was the go-to Mozartian on the Philips label until Alfred Brendel came along. She recorded almost everything Mozart wrote for piano, as well as the complete Schubert sonatas and music by Johann Christian Bach. Her collected works run to 58 CDs.
Raised in Poland until she was ten, she was moved by her parents to Salzburg in 1939 in order to study at the Mozarteum.
A thoughtful, sensitive artist, she was among the first mainstreamers to play chamber music with period instruments.
Deeply sorry to learn the news of Haebler’s passing. Her Mozart has been a source of endless joy for me over so many decades. May she rest in eternal peace.
I first heard her name years and years ago as Szeryng’s wonderful partner on his Mozart Sonata recordings.
And that duo also recorded the Beethoven sonatas. Wonderful! Makes me wish she had recorded some piano sonatas, too.
One of the respected musicians and pianists of the 20th century and beyond. Her recordings adorned many music libraries for decades. Truly respected artist.
I especially enjoy Haebler’s warm touch and care in making sure everything sounds clearly. There are other, more dramatic Mozart players I enjoy, but I feel at home with her. Rest in peace.
Or to put it another way, the go-to Philips Mozartean after the death of Haskil.
Very sad , but I am glad that she had such a long life. Her Mozart playing was out of this world, with inimitable voicing . I have just reminded myself of this with her recording of K332 above
