Covent Garden loses an Aida
OperaThe ROH has let it be known that Angel Blue has withdrawn from the last three performances of Aida ‘due to a family illness’.
Her replacement is the Swedish soprano Christina Nilsson.
Elīna Garanča is also out for the last two performances as Amneris, as scheduled. She is subbed by Olesya Petrova.
Lucky me I’m going tonight…
People, the days of the Tebaldis and Simionatos, or the Leontyne Prices and Grace Bumbrys are over! Those lyrical voices can simply not sustain the dramatic demands of these roles.
Now a days, one should need at least three or four different casts for a run of Aidas, and only few opera companies could afford that, unless the wages go ridiculously down. The audiences deserve better, the art form deserves better.
