A British conductor called Thatcher gets a call from France
OrchestrasThe contemporary conductor Toby Thatcher, founder of Ensemble xy, has been appointed assistant conductor next season at the Orchestre national d’Île–de–France.
Thatcher, 34, will also make his debut with the Ensemble Intercontemporain.
Originally from Sydney, Australia, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and holds UK nationality.
A wonderful conductor totally invested in making music together, not inflating his own ego. I hope he will go far.
I think from Australia originally counts as Australian! I know him, he has an Aussie accent to boot. You could say British-based but tbh, that’s not entirely true either.
There’s an absolutely lovely show reel on Youtube of him from years ago where he drops his baton mid performance and it sort of flings into the air. I wonder if it’s still there…
OMG I’m an idiot – I didn’t read the UK citizenship. This makes sense with his studies here. Retract it all!
Er… Aren’t all living conductors contemporary?
Go Toby!! Amazing appointment!
