Daniel Barenboim pulled out of this weekend’s Salzburg Whitsun Festival in poor health, but turned up anyway for a gala concert marking his 80th birthday year.

Old pals and new – Zubin Mehta, Placido Domingo, Rolando Villazon, Cecilia Bartoli, Lang Lang, Sony Yoncheva – paid affectionate tribute. from the stage. Unable to contain his emotion, Barenboim jumped up and conducted the concert’s finale.

Video clips below.

The Mafia. These people (ZM, PD, DB, MA) are so self regarding that they are blind and deaf to the sensible notion of when enough is enough or when to stop.

    • sly says:

Well, in MA’s case she can carry on for as long as she pleases. And I’m quite sure she’s not deaf.

    • Alan says:

Let them work away if they want. No one is forcing you to listen. I’ve seen Mehta and Barenboim regularly over the last few years and very much enjoyed all the concerts.

    • Gustavo says:

      Agree.

The western world, with all its self-indulgence, is relentlessly supporting these old sods.

Garnished by exotic youngsters who can’t hold a candle to established silverbacks.

    • Andy says:

Argerich? Her playing is still a wonder. Why should she stop if she can still play like that and audiences around the world are still keen to hear her?

    • Tristan says:

can’t agree more and mind the wise Maréchale in Rosenkavalier ‘Versteht Er nicht, wenn eine Sach’ ein End’ hat?’ – hideous

    • Concertgebouw79 says:

Last time I saw Zubin it was 3 year ago for a Ravel Valse with the Isreal Phil. Fantastic It was a good idea to continue at this moment.

    • Nicholas says:

For heaven’s sake, they deserve the afterglow for all of their contributions to music! Treat it for what it is: a final curtain call. I’d be applauding the loudest for each of them.

  • Alan says:

Mehta looking a lot better than he did in Florence last October. Good to see.

  • Andy says:

Sony Yoncheva would be a great name for a recording artist….

  • Zvi says:

Yoncheva is indeed a former Sony attist, but her name is aftet all Sonya.

  • Jobim says:

It while good while it last, mostly for him, one should know when time has come to leave the stage… Unless you can deliver an unique Bruckner 7th as frail Karajan did…

    • PaulD says:

I heard a Bruckner 7th conducted by a frail William Steinberg in Los Angeles in the 1970s. I’ve heard other performances since then, but that one has stuck with me.

    • Guesty1234 says:

WHO gets to decide when “time has come to leave the stage”? YOU? Why are you denying them their greatest pleasure in life, when they most need it? Who gives you the right? Stay home if you don’t want to hear them. Sheesh!

  • MMcGrath says:

Sorry to rain on some of your parades, but this business with Barenboim is Personenkult pure and simple. Fodder for People magazine and Bunte. It worries me that on the tail of Perma-Domingo we now have a obviously gravely ill Barenboim cancelling and popping up around the globe who can’t stay out of the limelight.

At least no one fell into the cake on this occasion.
