Ryuichi Sakamoto has died, at 71
RIPThe death was announced today of the renowned Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, a major figure in electronic music and film. He suffered from cancer for several years.
Sakamoto came to world attention in 1983, co-starring with David Bowie in Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. Four years later he won an Oscar, a Grammy and Golden Globe for Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor. Other films included The Sheltering Sky (1990), Little Buddha (1993), and The Revenant (2015).
He composed the opening music for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
