That voice. That repertoire. Just fills me with such sadness at what Russia can be, yet is. Why, oh why…?
Ditto. Not to mention seeing the gorgeous Dmitri again. Don’t forget that Russia is ruled undemocratically by a vicious, unelected autocrat. And for hundreds of years prior to that they lived under the Tsars and had no political autonomy.
Happy birthday SVR and memory eternal. DAH belongs in the pantheon alongside Ruffo, Warren, and Merrill. Memory eternal.
It’s not just his voice that I miss, but his huge and ever-present smile.
I don’t listen to a lot of Rachmaninov but I desperately miss Hvorostoski – the finest Verdi baritone since at least Bruson and taken from us cruelly young. His performances in Rigoletto and Traviata were, for me, definitive.
