The Met’s 20k singing prize has six winners
OperaThe tenor Anthony León, mezzo-soprano Natalie Lewis, soprano Teresa Perrotta, mezzo-soprano Sarah Saturnino, bass-baritone Christian Simmons and soprano Meredith Wohlgemuth were named last night as winners of the 2023 Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition.
Each takes home $20,000 and lots of promises.
Congrats to all but why no mention of the Ferrier final last Friday-it takes courage, talent and commitment to participate in these events, but if critics show such scant interest, no wonder classical music in the UK is so endangered..
Our own professional joke is that there are three kinds of statisticians: those who can count and those who cannot.
Technically, when the title is written like that, it means that the Met divided $20,000 among 6 recipients, which means that if they are being completely fair, every person receives the same sum of $3,333.33 (which must make their tax returns annoyingly inconvenient).
The correct wording is The Met’s Singing Competition Had 6 Winners for its $20k Prizes. But of course, the incorrect wording makes better click bait.
