Soweto jazz queen dies at 50

Originally an opera singer, she refashioned herself as a composer and songwriter in a jazz and indigenous idiom, achieving a vast following with a profound disregard for trends and commerciality.
I adored working with Gloria. The last time I conducted her was when she sang a glorious Maria in “Porgy & Bess” and a radiant Dolly in “Mandela Trilogy”, on a UK tour of both pieces. She truly was one of a kind.
Terribly sad…I was thinking about just yesterday!! As Adrian and I are thinking about a jazz opera for next year… sad sad…
