Death of a cello legend, 100
RIPSantiago Carvalho informs us that Alexander Cameron, principal cellist of the Royal Opera House and later of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, died in the night at 4:35am.
Tomorrow he would have been 101 years old.
Alex retired in 1988. Those of us who heard him still count ourselves lucky.
Are we sure he’s died? Because, very coincidentally, another well-known Alexander Cameron passed away yesterday – David Cameron’s brother:

other sites eg the very civilised COLIN’S COLUMN also report his death (see a lovely comment from the legendary Andrew Keener)
Alexander Cameron was a wonderful section leader at the LPO, and Santiago was a worthy successor. I was touched to exchange a few words with the latter after Bernard Haitink’s final UK concert at the Proms in 2019.
