British soprano jumps in as Salzburg’s Venus
OperaElīna Garanča has dropped out of the Salzburg Easter Festival as Venus in Richard Wagner’s Tannhäuser, due to illness.
Her late replacement is to be Emma Bell, who recenntly made Wagner debuts in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Zurich.
She has stepped into this production before ( in Munich, for Lise Davidsen ) so at least she will be familiar with its many stupidities.
Indeed, Castellucci should learn to read German so that he knows what he is arranging.
I guess this was in the role of Elisabeth. I wonder if the Venus’ costume has something to do with Garancas sickness.
Brilliant! Hope Emma Bell absolutely loves the experience and totally bosses a glorious role – sharing the stage with some truly fantastic artists – a great opportunity!
Is there a hidden epidemic going on because all you seem to hear at the moment is singers having to drop out and be replaced?
Garanca seems to have become the Kaufmann of female operatic performers – CONSTANTLY cancelling scheduled gigs. In any case, her announced replacement is vastly inferior.
