Just in: Hamburg names Israeli music director
OperaThe next GMD of Hamburg State Opera is to be the Israeli Omer Meir Wellber, presently chief of Vienna’s volksoper.
He starts in Hamburg in autumn 2025 and will maintain both jobs for two years, leaving Vienna in 2027.
Wellber was previously music director of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester, until an abrupt disagreement with its management.
In Hamburg, he succeeds Kent Nagano.
Isn’t he also music director in Palermo ?
Not anymore. Dan Ettinger is now the music director in Palermo
Nope, Ettinger is in Napoli. Don’t be rude to Southern Italy.
Yes. And doing fantastic work there!
Music Director of the Teatro Massimo Palermo and Artistic Director of the Toscanini Festival
It is unclear. First, why did he leave BBC PHIL so quickly without leaving any mark whatsoever? Second, he just started Vienna – is it already clear he will not be extended? These caeeer jumps from one job to the other are unclear!
I look forward to attend Lohengrin in Vienna conducted by him in April. He was very good in Chénier with Kaufmann and Harteros with the Munich forces in Paris.
These conductors (or are they just arm wavers?) switch positions more frequently than museum directors. They barely have time to settle in before they’re off again. .
Congratulation, great conductor, no politics, great honor for israeli musician
I haven´t been a big fan of him…..until i heard his Boston Symphony debut in January….Fantastic, fiery, brilliant, flexible Beethoven!!!!
