German orchestras say audiences are trickling back
OrchestrasA survey last months of 122 out of 129 German opera, concert and radio orchestras finds that most think their core audiennce is returninng, albeit very slowly.
Some sixty percent confirm that they are still way short of pre-Covid levels.
Around 46 percent report a strong reluctance among older audiences.
Two thirds of those surveyed – 76 orchestras – admit they have lost subscribers.
It’s slow.
More here.
La Monnaie in Brussels is doing brilliantly. Tickets for Onegin are flying out the door and the two-part spectacular on the life of Elizabeth I – Bastarda – looks to be going the same way. La Monnaie has been on a roll for some time now.
Alain Altinoglu is excellent. He seems to be doing very well at the Frankfurt Radio Symphony also.
Went to some of the Mozart Week concerts in Salzburg over the weekend. Very few empty seats at any of them
“…survey last months of 122 out of 129…”
129!
If German orchestras would only play more works by ‘underrepresented’ composers, their halls would be packed.
…at least that’s how many [people identifying as] Americans would tackle the issue
“Trickling” back is right. And despite 90+ percent public funding, you still have to spend €50+ for a decent single ticket.
