Domingo moves Operalia to Africa
OperaIn a shrewd move, Placido Domingo has located his next Operalia competition in South Africa, a country that has produced a stream of singing talent in the past decade.
Recent editions of Operalia have been compromised by Domingo’s dubious intimacy with the Putin regime in Moscow.
Domingo says: ‘We are proud to announce that the Thirtieth Anniversary Edition of Operalia, the World Opera Competition, will be hosted by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cape Town Opera and will be held at the Artscape Theater Center in Cape Town, South Africa from October 30 to November 5.’
Not only in the past decade,
Mimi Coertse (star in Vienna since the 50s and prominent member of the Ensemble), Elisabeth Connell, Johan Botha, Deon van der Walt, Gidon Saks, Fredrick Dalberg and Kobie van Rensburg are/were South Africans.
There are other colors in the rainbow these days. I can’t think of a finer place including weather wise for Domingo’s controversial dotage
Dear Novagerio
You omitted the two leading South African sopranos of today – Pretty Yende and Johanni van Oostrum.
How about Golda Schultz?
A Capetown native and outstanding at the Met.
I mentioned those who have had careers longer than just the last decade, as stated in the article.
And all the above mentioned singers would agree that Marita Napier definitely deserves a place on this list…
Re the dubious intimacy with Moscow, not sure that this move is, or should be, expected to counter that. As of today, South Africa is starting 11 days of joint naval drills with Russia and China, which is likely to be read internationally as an endorsement of Putin’s war.
Out of 29 Operalias, only 2 took place in Moscow (2011 and 2021), last year was in Latvia.
(South) Africa is a great choice – I hope many singers from the African continent will take part.
Please, please, PLEASE people … Africa is a continent with a he’ll of a lot of countries in it. Operalia has been moved to South Africa, the country.
This is the best news ever to hit cultural South Africa
