The Met will commemorate Ukraine war anniversary
OrchestrasThe Metropolitan Opera is putting on an extraordinary performance of Mozart’s Requiem and Beethoven’s fifth symphony on February 24, the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin will conduct the Met orchestra, with several Ukrainian soloists in the Requiem.
Met Genera Manager Peter Gelb said: ‘Mozart’s Requiem is to remember the innocent victims of the war, and Beethoven’s Fifth is in anticipation of the victory to come.’
The Met’s notable support for Ukraine is interesting. Perhaps it speaks to where many of the house’s patrons have their cultural roots.

But no Ukrainian music? Really? Any excuse for the upper class to hear yet another Beethoven 5…
I’m pretty sure they’re also doing some Silvestrov (even if it’s a reprise of his piece from the last program).
Any support for Ukraine is welcome but I would have found Ukrainian music!
Tchaikovsky’s 2nd symphony, Little Russian, would have been a good choice. It incorporates (3) three Ukrainian folk songs.

But isn’t the whole reason their systems were down for a week+ and they lost millions in revenue is they were hacked by Russians because of their very vocal support to ukraine?

What could possibly go wrong with any Master Plan by Peter Gelb? Well:
1. How many dead Ukrainians will victory take?
2. How many dollars and guns sent to Ukraine go to Ukrainians?
3. What follows said victory? Putin`s trial, Russia`s democracy, friendly US-relations, Beethoven`s ninth, rainbows and lollipops during intermission?
