The state of South Ossetia is in mourning for its most successful composer, Zhanna Plieva.

She wrote seven symphonies, three ballets and numerous film scores. In 2002 she was awarded State Prize of the Russian Federation for the ballet Heavenly Mirror.

        Really? That’s what we’re highlighting here? A composer dies, and the geopolitical situation of her state is what matters. I guess there’s the reason why the arts are under-appreciated in our current society.

          It is correct to label her a Russian composer as she most likely identified herself of being Russian by nationality. But still it should be made clear that South-Ossetia (unlike North-Ossetia) belongs to Georgia but is occupied by Russian troops.
