Osmo Vänskä will conduct from wheelchair
OrchestrasThe conductor has confirmed that he will conduct Sinfonia Lahti next Thursday from a wheelchair.
Vänskä, 69, brke his hip and shoulder last month while playing with his granddaughter at an indoor playground.
He underwent a 10-hour operation and has been told to expect a six-month recovery period. ‘I don’t even have the theoretical possibility to stand, but I try to use only my hand when conducting and not my upper arm at all,’ he told Helsingin Sanomat.
We wish Osmo a speedy recovery.
He’s scheduled to conduct Mahler 2 in Seattle this coming June. Hope he’s well by then and able to appear.
It’s so nice to see Hannu Lintu and Esa-Pekka Salonen supporting …
Godspeed Osmo!
I am relieved that Osmo was not paralyzed. He became very interested in fitness during the time he led the Minnesota Orchestra, and that will help him recover. I suppose the temporary movement restrictions can provide an opportunity to learn new ways to conduct.
Parane pian, Osmo!
