Just in: Ex-trombone is Munich’s next conductor
OrchestrasThe Munich Symphony Orchestra has appointed Joseph Bastian as its music director from next summer.
Bastian, 41, was Principal Bass Trombone with Bavarian Radio in Munich until February 2016 when Robin Ticciati fell sick and he rose from the ranks to take over three concerts.
Since then he has switched bone permanently for baton as Principal Conductor of the Orchestre Dijon Bourgogne in France, and of the Asian Youth Orchestra.
Bastian who is French-Swiss, lives in Munich with his wife, the soprano, Lydia Teuscher, and their two children.

Yearly liver checks, please…
Why; are you afraid he won’t de-liver the good?
Lydia Teuscher sang some impressive Mozart and Mendelssohn (the extended and tricky ‘Infelice’) here in June with the BRSO.
Very big surpise to take someone young not famous.
a very good deal for the orchestra, he’s a fine conductor
Misunderstanding for some people. It’s Munich Symphony Orchestra, not Philharmonic. Not the same category.
