Israel Philharmonic plays Arab national anthem
OrchestrasThe Israel Phil’s epoch-making concert in Abu Dhabi has been uploaded on Youtube.
After a short speech by Laav Shani, the orchestra plays the anthems of both nations.
Some of the players are definitely teary-eyed.
Watch from 11:30.
Last week I have seen Laav Shani in concert with Orchestre de Paris for Tchaikovsky 5th. Before I have read and heard a lot of eloges about him from Barenboum, Buchbinder and Zubin. I didn’t know if they were right. And in fact I was very impress by his flexibility and his adaptability as a guest conductor. They were right.
“Arab” anthem? You mean the Emirati anthem, probably?
Not so sure I agree with you there. “Emirati” describes the country’s political structure, that is to say, it’s a confederation of seven tribal emirates or sheikdoms. But its national identity is better described by the second word in its name, United Arab Emirates.
I suspect Norman meant “AN” Arab anthem, not “The” anthem. As in not its usual fare.
Good to see this happen. I guess the Zaha Hadid concert hall still hasn’t been built (or never got past the cool drawing stage?).

Probably more an event that the Israeli anthem was played there!
Remarkable to see and hear.
The ritual of moving a piano recalls a Thomas Beecham anecdote: After a dreadful rehearsal and departure of the pianist, the conductor told the stagehands, “I shouldn’t bother, gentlemen. It will probably slink away by itself.”
