Esa-Pekka is in mourning
RIPMessage from E-P Salonen:
My dear mother was laid to rest last Friday in Helsinki on a beautiful, bright winter’s day. Pia would have turned 95 next month. Her long life was celebrated with family and friends with lots of memories, love and laughter.
My sincere thanks for all the wonderful, heartwarming messages.

It’s a beautiful photo of Esa-Pekka and his mom.
My sincere condolences to the family.
Maestro Salonen, my father passed in 2018. I was with him the final 8 hours right to the end. He was a strong influence in my career as a pianist and a conductor. It is a unique loss when we lose our parents. My most heart felt sympathies to you and your family!
Deepest condolences to Esa-Pekka and his family.
I am reminded of the Philharmonia’s tour to (“darkest”) Helsinki in 2009 (there’s video clip somewhere) where Esa-Pekka rehearses with the orchestra and tells them of his conversation with his mother:
E-PS: She asked, ‘what’s in the programme tonight ?’, and I replied my piano concerto. And she said “anything else ?” and I replied “the Rite of Spring” and she said ” well, at least something I like !”.
