Tonight is the last London concert of the Albion Quartet, at the Wigmore Hall.

Formed in full optimism in 2016, the group have suffered like all others during Covid and Brexit. They have now decided to go their separate ways.

The members are Tamsin Waley-Cohen and Emma Parker, violins; Ann Beilby, viola; and Nathaniel Boyd, cello.

Last chance to hear them here.

how did Nathaniel Boyd concentrate with those three fine-looking girls ?

    A significant loss 🙁

Thanks for posting that fine performance. But “last chance to hear them”? No! Thankfully, their artistry will live forever on the www.

As does – for example – that of Emil Wipperich, principal horn of the Vienna Philharmonic from 1882 to 1914. He played frequently under Gustav Mahler. The webpage below contains a link to the earliest recording we have of Siegfried’s horn call from Act 2 of that opera. It probably dates from 1904, and Wipperich is playing a Viennese F horn. Note the remarkable purity of his tone. You need to scroll down to find the mp3 audio clip.

Sad news. They’re due to be here in York in a couple of weeks’ time for a BMS York concert so hope that’s still going to happen.

  • James Essen says:

There are too many string quartets

  • Guest says:

The Albion performance of Britten Qrt 2 on YouTube (played after a lecture) is one of the finest vivid and dramatic quartet performances of that work IMHO. They will be missed.
