Ulster has new chief
OrchestrasThe Ulster Orchestra has promoted Patrick McCarthy, its Head of Artistic Planning & Operations, to be Artistic Director and Deputy Chief Executive.
He will work closely with the incoming CEO Auveen Sands.
They will be having some difficult conversations shortly with the BBC,which wants to slash its funding for orchestras.
Although the Ulster Orchestra is not a BBC Orchestra, it does get income from the BBC for broadcasting some of their concerts. In the last financial year I believe it got ~13% of its total income from the BBC (I could be wrong!) Most of its income comes from the Arts Council NI.
Just a question – has the BBC’s funding been reduced too? It would be good to know, given that much of it is provided by our licence fees.
The headline is highly misleading. The chief executive is Auveen Sands and she’s not incoming-she’s already on the job. Interesting that an experienced orchestra manager wasn’t recruited (or couldn’t be recruited) to run the place. Also interesting that the promotion wasn’t made under the longtime managing director, who has left.
