Juilliard-trained Eugene Tzigane is to be chief conductor and artistic director of the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra in Finland.

He starts next autumn.

Tzigane, 40, has previously headed the Nordwestdeutschen Philharmonie.

    American? Maestro Tzigane’s bio indicates that he was born in Japan. Perhaps you mean “American trained?”

      One’s birthplace does not confer nationality. Ozawa was born in China but has always been considered Japanese. Blomstedt is American-born and lived in the USA but has always identified as a Swede. Training has zilch to do with it.

        It depends on the nationality of one’s parents, usually the mother, whether birthplace confers nationality. ‘Identifies as’ is presumably cultural preference, which says something about one’s psyche, but unrelated to legal status.

      Plenty of Americans were born abroad, as Americans. Among them Lorin Maazel and John McCain. Also, my children.
