Young Brit jumps in for sick Kirill Petrenko
NewsThe Berlin Philharmonic conductor Kirill Petrek has pulled out of this weekend’s much-anticipated performances of Mendelssohn’s Elijah at Munich’s Isarphilharmonie.
‘Health grounds’ are given as the cause.
His replacement is the young British conductor Duncan Ward.
And what is happening with the Mahler scheduled next year in Baden Baden? Is it true that Daniel Harding jumps in?
Harding was always scheduled to conduct the two Mahler 5 concerts. Petrenko is scheduled to do all the Strauss programs.
Ah OK, I read somewhere that there was a conductor change. Thanks
Sorry to mention, but I heard too many health issue claims from herr Petrenko through his tenure in Berlin for a relatively young 50 year old man.
I may be a stupid soulless ass, but this looks suspicious.
Hope he is in fine health and does not has any chronic disease that affects his career.
Health includes mental health, of course.
He simply seems to have a bad year with a lot coming together as most of the illnesses are unrelated. Not sure about this concert, but his previous cancellations this season were over a bad back (something he has been struggling with for years), a Covid infection and a broken foot.
About the “bad back” guess (for that is all we are allowed), a predecessor of his in Berlin suffered a back injury skiing and was plagued with excruciating pain for the rest of his life (12 years) but went on with the work and the commitments anyway.
And? Do you suggest this approach?
I just hope that he doesn’t drop performances or projects which he don’t like for some reason.
This is sad he must have health issues. He has cancelled a few times since taking over the BPO.
Is “much-anticipated” a personal opinion or serious journalism?
I sometimes wonder in what state the authors are writing their articles when you read “Kirill Petrek”, “Theodor Kurensis” and other defacements here. As a self-proclaimed quality medium, it should be possible to maintain a minimum of correct spelling.
Back trouble again, maybe?
Actually, who is Kirill Petrek? Maybe we could all use an edit function on this site…
Once again, I hope he is healthy enough to make the trip to the U.S., I paid well to see him conduct Mahler 7 in Chicago!
Indeed. Touring is a physical grind. I hope the Berlin Phil has a Plan B.
Petrenko is making more news with his health than with his performances, Berlin is in for a rough ride.
What a pleasant replacement for KP. May the maestro get back on his feet – literally – soon.
Tis unfortunate, I just relistened to a live performance of Petrek conducting Rachman’s 2nd Symphony the other day.
Guys, open your eyes !!! The only reason Petrenko cancelled Munich is that he needs to store energy before the Berlin Philharmonic US tour. He can hardly deal with the Berlin pressure.
