One of Poland’s leading historians, Marian Fuks, has died at a great age.

An international authority on Polish Jewry and the Holocaust, Fuks wrote a major work on music in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. he also contributed research on the composer Stanisław Moniuszko.

Born in Plonsk in September 1914, Fuks was incarcerated by the Russians in 1939. Two years later he was released to fight in an armoured brigade that fought against the Germans.

In 1967 he was stripped of his military honours and pension as part of the Communist government’s anti-Semitic purge.
