Carly Simon mourns 2 sisters in 2 days
RIPYesterday we reported the passing of Broadway composer Lucy Simon. Today, she was followed into eternity by her eldest sister Joanna Simon, a mezzo soprano with an opera career that ran from 1962 to 1985.
Among other distinctions, Joanna appeared in the first recording of Handel’s Tamerlano and in the 1967 world premiere of Alberto Ginastera’s Bomarzo.
After retiring from the stage she became an arts correspondent for PBS. Married to the novelist Gerald Walker, after his death she became life companion to the newscaster Walter Cronkite.
Joanna Simon died a day before her 86th birthday.
Awful for her. My condolences.
Reminds me of Debbie Reynolds and daughter Carrie Fisher.
(Perhaps the circumstances are just a tad different…)
RIP to two very accomplished sisters and condolences to their equally talented sibling.
Joanna Simon was in the first cast of BOMARZO by Ginastera, here in Washington D.C. She sings some demanding music in the CBS recording made at that time.
