A Russian reaches major final
NewsFor the first time since the Putin invasion of Ukraine, a Russian musician has reached the final of a major competition.
The four finalists of the Concours de Geneve are:
Sergey Belyavsky (28 years old, Russia)
Kevin Chen (17 years old, Canada)
Kaoruko Igarashi (27 years old, Japan)
Zijian Wei (23 years old, China)
Uh, am I missing something? Didn’t Russian pianist Anna Geniushene make the finals of the Cliburn, and win 2ilver?
Absolutely correct.
Zijian Wei is torturous to watch, with the facial gyrations. I had to stop watching. The very best pianists have composure.
In good company?

Brendel realized he was doing this early in his career and learnt to overcome it.
I remember a concert rather late in his career when I was sitting above the stage with a clear view of Brendel’s face. After a few minutes I closed my eyes for the rest of the concert. The facial antics drowned out the music completely. However, with closed eyes it was a wonderful concert!
J’aurais préféré d’autres finalistes. Patience.
Guess you didn’t watch the Cliburn this past summer? 2 Russians in the finals, one of them won the silver medal. Just making an innocent observation.
So now you advocate politics in the competitions…
Make up your mind? Perhaps?
